In traditional astrology, essential dignity answers one precise question: how strong is a planet by the sign it occupies, independent of any house position or aspect? From domicile — a planet ruling its own sign, fully at home — to exaltation, where it operates at peak expression, down through detriment and fall, the system is rigorously symmetrical: detriment is always the sign opposite the domicile, fall always the sign opposite the exaltation. Nothing here is arbitrary. The architecture was codified by Ptolemy, refined by Guido Bonatti, and given its most practical English form by William Lilly — all working with the seven traditional planets (Sun through Saturn). The outer planets — Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — carry no classical dignity assignments; any modern rulership or exaltation attributed to them remains a proposal, not a consensus, and is presented here as such.
Essential Dignities
D
Domicile
Domicile is the strongest essential dignity in traditional astrology — a planet ruling its own sign, operating with full authority and natural ease.
E
Exaltation
Exaltation is the essential dignity that places a planet at its most honoured and potent expression — a precise, degree-specific peak within the traditional seven-planet system.
X
Detriment
Detriment places a planet in the sign opposite its domicile, weakening its essential dignity and forcing it to work against its own nature.
