Heavenly Stems

The ten Heavenly Stems (天干, Tiāngān) are the "sky layer" of BaZi: each of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — expressed first in its yang form, then in its yin, giving ten distinct qualities of qi. Pure, outward, and visible, they are the face a person or a year turns toward the world. The stem sitting on your Day pillar carries a special weight: it is the Day Master (日主, Rìzhǔ), the axis around which your entire chart is read — your self, your nature, the lens through which every other stem and branch speaks.

甲

Jia (甲)

Jia 甲, the first of the ten Heavenly Stems in BaZi, embodies Yang Wood at its most elemental: the tall tree, the pioneer, the upward force that cannot be bent.

Yi

Yi 乙, the second Heavenly Stem in BaZi, embodies Yin Wood — the adaptive, tenacious energy of vines, grass, and flowering things that find their way through any obstacle.

Bing (丙)

Ding

Ding 丁, the fourth Heavenly Stem in BaZi, embodies Yin Fire — the candle flame that illuminates, nurtures, and endures through focused inner light.

Wu (戊) – Yang Earth Stem

Wu 戊, the fifth Heavenly Stem in BaZi, embodies Yang Earth — the mountain, the wall, the immovable centre that holds all things in place.

Ji

Ji 己, the sixth Heavenly Stem in BaZi, embodies Yin Earth — the fertile garden soil that nourishes, receives, and quietly transforms everything it holds.
